READ Hebrews 12:18-29 “Persevering Faith”
QUESTIONS:
We find something really interesting happening in the first part of our passage today. Read Hebrews 12:18-24 and see if you can tell the verse where the mood or feel of the passage changes. What verse did you feel the mood change? _________ Why do you say that?
Let’s take v. 18-21 first. What scene from the Bible is this describing? (Hint: Ex. 19:16-25)
Describe this scene. What would it have been like? Use details and verses from this passage to help.
We see a great contrast happen in verse 22-24. Mount Zion is speaking of Heaven and is comparing the scene in heaven with the scene from Mount Sinai. Describe the scene of v. 22-24 and compare it with the scene from earlier. (Try to research the terms you don’t understand for a clearer picture of what is going on. It’s important.)
In verse 24, Abel presented a sacrifice that ultimately killed him. His blood speaks a word of faith in God and trusting in him. But how does Jesus’ death and sacrifice speak a better word?
In v. 25 there is another warning. The author of Hebrews says that those who did not heed the warnings given to Israel at Sinai and built a golden calf were judged and died. That was a very fearful and scary scene. Now Christ tells us to come to him and receive rest. Just place our faith in him. The author asks, “How much more will we be judged now if we reject the warning Christ offers from heaven?” Explain this.
v. 26. God shook the earth at Mt. Sinai but He will shake the entire universe (heavens) at his next appearance. Are you ready for God to send his Son from Heaven?
Read v. 27. When God shakes the universe, will what you have your faith in remain? I’m not talking about what you say you have your faith in, but the lifestyle that your faith produces. Will all the things you base your life on, remain after God shakes the universe? Explain.
In v. 28, why is it important that the author phrased the verse that we “receive” a kingdom that cannot be shaken? Is that important? Why?
What is a proper response to receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken? Explain your answer.
