READ Hebrews 10:26-39 “False Faith”
QUESTIONS:
Although it is contrary to society and very unpopular, it is biblical and good to warn people with judgments from God. To say it another way, boldly proclaiming the warnings God gives against unbelief and disobedience is a very good thing. Warnings from God are designed to loosen the passions we have for this world.
You will see this section is titled “False Faith”. Today you will receive a warning from God and I pray it will loosen the grips of this world’s desires and free you to joyfully seek a lasting and better joy in God!
Read v. 26-27. How do these verses warn us?
What does it mean to “go on sinning deliberately”?
Do you have deliberate sin in your life? If so, is it worth the punishment promised in v. 27?
Read v. 28-31. The Law of Moses allowed the death penalty if there were 2 or 3 witnesses who saw the crime. God knows all things, sees all things, and judges all things and therefore needs no witness and can justly punish sinners. How should this affect how we live?
Read v. 31. Is God just to punish those who are outside of faith and continually deny the existence of God with their lifestyles? Explain.
We see in verse 32 a change in style. The author goes from warnings against false faith to showing what authentic faith looks like. In America, we are facing a severe problem. Because we have been so prosperous and Christianity has been so accepted for most of our history, we equate Christianity with success and comfort. We believe good Christians are going to be favored and things should always work out well according to our standards. We think things like, “God wants me to be happy, and so everything is going to go good for me because I love Jesus.” This is not the gospel! Christians in the 1st century loved Jesus and had their heads cut off because of it. So for the remainder of this day, I want to try to eliminate the False Faith of the Prosperity Gospel. The Prosperity Gospel says that if you receive Jesus, your life will be better by this world's standards.
I want you to watch this youtube clip to better understand the false prosperity gospel.
7. What did you learn from this clip?
8. Read v. 32-34. The people the author of Hebrews is speaking of were believers in Christ. It says they were enlightened by the gospel and believers. Yet bad things happened to them. List below the things that happened to them AFTER they were enlightened.
9. What does this mean? What does it mean that even though Christ is your Savior, your life may not always go perfectly by this world's standards?
Here’s an article I read the week I was writing this study on Hebrews:
On February 21, 1993, in Egypt 3 Americans, 1 New Zealander, and 1 Egyptian were arrested for forming a “Christian Missionary Organization.” The wives of Brian Eckheart and Thomas Martin obviously sympathized with their husbands. They spoke with them by phone in Tura Prison in Cario every 12 hours. The result of this sympathetic relationship was that the wives and children were evicted from their homes on 2 days notice.
10. They were trying to start a Missionary Organization. Why would God allow them to be treated the way they were? Why were the missionaries willing to do this?
11. Read the end of v. 34. This is why the Christians mentioned here in Hebrews could go through what they did. It’s also why the missionaries in Egypt could go through what they did. Explain from this verse why they could go through what they did.
