READ Hebrews 9:11-28 “By A Better Sacrifice”

QUESTIONS:

We spoke yesterday about how the high priest would have to sacrifice an animal outside the Holy of Holies, and then approach God in the Holy of Holies by the blood of the sacrifice. The Tabernacle and Holy of Holies on earth is just a small representation of a real Holy of Holies.

  1. Read v. 11-12.  What is the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle of the Old Testament representing?

  2. Knowing how a priest in the OT was able to enter the earthly Holy of Holies, how was Christ able to enter the real Holy of Holies?

  3. How does Christ secure for us eternal redemption?

  4. Read v. 13-14.  What makes Christ a superior sacrifice over bulls and goats?

  5. Read v. 16-17.  How is what Christ did similar to a will that someone makes after they die?

  6. Read v. 22.  Why is blood needed to forgive sin?  Why could water and wine not be used instead of blood?

  7. Read v. 24-26.  A priest would go into the earthly Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle once a year to make atonement for the people of Israel’s sins.  But he could not stay there.  Eventually, he had to come out because he was merely human.  What makes Jesus a greater priest and makes salvation possible according to this verse?

  8. Read v. 27.  Every person dies and then is judged.  Every person deserves one sentence from God…guilty.  Christ died and was then judged by God and received the sentence…Perfect!  After we die, how can we receive the judgment “perfect” from God?

  9. Let’s think a second on the magnitude of Christ’s death and just how far-reaching and powerful it is.  A few questions to get your thoughts going…and then a conclusion. If Christ died at a point in time 2000 years ago, ushering in a time of reformation (v.10), how did anyone before Christ’s death receive salvation?  Did Moses and David go to heaven when they died?  Did they have to wait 1000s of years to go to heaven?  Explain your answer.

  10. If sin deserves death, physically and spiritually, why didn’t Adam and Eve die the second they sinned against God?  (Hint:  Romans 3:23-26)

  11. What did Jesus mean when he died on the cross and said, “It is finished”?  (Hint:  Hebrews 9:24-26)

We cannot understand the magnitude of what Christ’s death accomplished.  It has the power to reach back 1000s of years to save OT saints who trusted by faith in a death that was coming and exercised their faith through the slaughtering of animals.  It also was sufficient to delay the punishment of Adam and Eve and all Old Testament saints.  It also was the end of all works and sacrifices for all who believe in his death as sufficient.
