Section 2:

THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST’S PRIESTHOOD

Hebrews 4:14-7:28

In the Old Testament, priests were those men, chosen by the Law, to serve before the Lord for the people.  There was one High Priest that would go into the Holiest Place in the Tabernacle once a year to make a sacrifice of atonement of the people of Israel.  But why don’t we have High Priest today?  Did we stop sinning?  Do we not need forgiveness anymore?

Section 2 will show us how Jesus Christ is the supreme and perfect High Priest.  He never stops interceding for those who are his!

READ Hebrews 4:14-16 – “Christ as Our High Priest”

QUESTIONS:

  1. We’ve seen how Jesus is greater than angels, greater than Moses, greater than Joshua, and greater than David. Now we are going to see how Jesus is greater than Aaron as the perfect, great high priest. The role of the priest in the OT was an extremely important responsibility. Before we can go forward, we must be sure we know what the High Priest did. Research what the role of the High Priest was, specifically Aaron, and write it down.

  2. Read Leviticus 16. Describe why Aaron had to do so much before he could offer a sacrifice for the people of Israel. What did Aaron have to do first?

  3. There are 2 main reasons the sacrifices in the OT were only temporary for forgiving sins. The priest offering the sacrifice wasn’t perfect.  No matter how clean the water is coming from the faucet, if the cup bringing it to your mouth is dirty with sewage, it cannot fulfill your thirst.  In the same way, a clean cup filled with sewage cannot fulfill your thirst.  In the OT, both the cup (Aaron) and the water (bull or goat) were sewage in the sight of God and therefore couldn’t perfectly forgive sin.  Explain below how Jesus was the only one that could perfectly and eternally forgive sin.

  4. Jesus was the perfect high priest and the perfect sacrifice.  The reason it worked is because Jesus, the perfect high priest, offering himself, the perfect sacrifice, was and is the only thing God is willing to accept eternally for our forgiveness of sin.  Jesus was the perfect cup and the perfect water that quenched the wrath of God forever! This alone should cause you to treasure Christ forever…and just like a dumb infomercial…BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Jesus’ death presented to God by himself, forgave our sins, but we are still in a battle for obedience.  Yes God can declare us innocent because of what Jesus did, but if we love God and have authentic faith, wouldn’t we want to be obedient, please him, and love him?   YES!  This is the beauty of Jesus, because Jesus was tempted every way we are and overcame that sin, we can go to him for help in our battles against sin.

HIS SACRIFICE BIDS US TO COME…HIS LIFE EXPERIENCE ALLOWS US TO BE OPEN AND HONEST WITH HIM.  No need to worry about embarrassing Jesus.  He’s faced it all!

READ v.14-16 again.  Explain below the importance of these verses.  Why are they important to you?

  5. How did Aaron and Israel have to approach God in the OT?

  6. How does this verse say we can approach God?

  7. What has changed?  Why is there a difference?

  8. If your passion in life was to run a marathon, why is it important to talk to someone who has already run a marathon for help?  How frustrating would it be if the person you wanted to talk to couldn't see you because they are to busy or didn’t think you were important?

  9. If you’re in a battle against sin, why is it important to talk to someone who overcame every temptation?  How does it make you feel that you can boldly approach this person at any time?

  10. Jesus is sitting right now at the right hand of God.  If you were given the special opportunity to transport into heaven, walk up to the throne of heaven where Jesus is seated next to God, and could say or ask anything you wanted…what would you say or write?  Write it below:

Guess what?!  If you are in Christ, it just happened!   TREASURE CHRIST TODAY!!!!!
