READ Hebrews 1:4-14 – “Superior to the Angels”

QUESTIONS:

Yesterday, the author showed us from the very beginning of the book Jesus is greater than all things.  He is the center of redemptive history and greater than all things in the Old Testament (OT).  Today the author will show us that Jesus is even greater than angels!  Two angels destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.  Angels surround the throne of God crying out in worship in the throne room of heaven.  And Jesus is greater!  Let’s see why.

  1. Verse 4 shows us he is superior to angels because of his name.  What does a name represent? How does Jesus’ name make him superior to angels?

  2. The author quotes 7 OT passages to defend the superiority of Jesus.  Let’s look briefly at a few of these passages to learn why Jesus is far superior to angels.

    • v.5 – “You are my Son, today I have begotten you” comes from Psalm 2.  Psalm 2 is a Psalm written to foreshadow Christ’s reign on the earth.  Read Psalm 2 and make notes below about the supremacy of Christ.

    • v.6 – “Let all God’s angels worship him” is from Deuteronomy 32:43.  Read this passage and make notes below of the awesomeness Moses saw in the coming Savior.

    • v.10-12 – “You Lord laid the foundation of the earth…” is from Psalm 102:25-27.  Read this passage and make notes below of things that amazed this Psalmist about the coming King!

  3. Create 2 lists. In one, list the characteristics of Christ. In the other, list the characteristics of angels.

  4. Read v.14.  What does this passage imply is a major responsibility of angels?

  5. Many people love to talk about angels and demons.  (Demons are simply fallen angels)  A very popular topic of discussion today is spiritual warfare, which is, how angels and demons interact and battle.  Although this is important, at times this can distract us from the most important thing and topic of conversation.  Many times we would rather talk about ministers to our salvation rather than the provider of our salvation.  The author of Hebrews makes it clear that angels are great, but we have one that is greater.  I want you to do something a little different with the remainder of your time.  Use your Christian imagination and try to describe in detail the throne room of God.  Describe what you see & what you think it’s like.  Are there angels there?  Is Jesus there?  Is there a throne?  Explain and let the thoughts of the majesty of God remain with you all day!
