READ Hebrews 10:1-18 “By A Better Sacrifice”
QUESTIONS:
The purpose of Chapter 10:1-18 is to show that God’s plan for dealing with sin has always been Jesus! There never was a plan “B”. Jesus was always the way and the Old Testament was a shadow of things to come. Let’s dig in!
The anticipation of an event further intensifies the significance or greatness of the event. For example, why do we wait 4 years for the Olympics? Why is a wedding better after an engagement period? Read v. 1. How could the Old Testament shadows of Christ intensify the significance of Christ?
Imagine you are alive in the Old Testament days. Read the end of v.1 and all of v. 4. Knowing these sacrifices couldn’t really address your sin problem, what would be your attitude toward offering sacrifices repeatedly?
If you were told, after years and years of offering sacrifices, that there was coming a day very soon that there would be a perfect sacrifice given by the perfect priest, that wouldn’t only atone for sins committed, but defeat the power of sin altogether and would sanctify you growing you in holiness and obedience everyday…what would be your response? Have you gotten too comfortable and taken for granted the death of Jesus and its power in your life?
Read carefully v. 14. The verb tense in this verse is very important, and some translations don’t do quite as well as others. I will include the passage below from the ESV to insure accuracy and consistency. Read it 5 times in a row. “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” There is a great theological bomb in this passage. In your own words, write below what you believe this verse is saying. Be overly literal and explanatory.
Let’s breakdown this passage phrase by phrase:
Single Offering:
What is the single offering?
What 2 things does this offering accomplish?
Has perfected for all time:
What does it mean that we have been made perfect for all time?
What is the significance of this verb being in the past tense? (Perfect Tense in the Greek)
Read Romans 5:1 & 8:1. How does this help you better understand the phrase “perfected for all time”?
Read 2nd Corinthians 5:21. What does this passage show us about how God looks at us right now if we are saved and a follower of Christ?
Are being sanctified:
What does it mean to be sanctified?
What is the significance of this verb being in the present tense?
Explain the significance of “made perfect” being in the past tense & “are being sanctified” in the present tense. How are these two things related to each other in your life?
Would you rather be declared righteous before God and then out of love and thankfulness live a life pleasing to him…or…would your rather try to live a life pleasing to God in hope to be declared right one day? Explain why you answered the way you did. Also explain the reason you didn’t choose the other.
6. This verse is very clear! If the single offering of Christ has been made real in your life by faith 2 things will happen! You will be declared right before God, and you will live a life of sanctification, which means you will grow in holiness and bear fruit. If you claim to have been affected by the single offering of Christ but continue to live a life unpleasing to him, what could be the problem? Is this possible?
7. Many people believe you can lose your salvation. If you truly are a follower of Christ by faith, explain how v. 10 could be used to show you can’t lose your salvation.
