READ Hebrews 11:13-22 “Heroes of the Faith”

QUESTIONS:

Our definition of faith has been the unseen substance that enables us to outwardly pursue a better possession and an abiding one in Christ.  Our faith relentlessly pursues Christ as our reward and our outward actions become the seen evidence of the inner assurance of the gospel.  With that said, let’s study our next list of heroes of faith and learn from them how we can strengthen our faith.

  1. Read v. 13.  Why does it take faith to live a life that doesn’t receive its promised and better reward until after death?  Why is this hard?

  2. In verse 13, how do we know these people had faith?

  3. What does it mean they saw them?  How did this change the way they lived their lives?

  4. If you live by faith, how does that make you a stranger or exile?

  5. Read v. 14-16.  Do you live a life that truly is seeking a different homeland?  Do you look more comfortable in this world or in the world you’re seeking?  Explain.

  6. If you live this life by faith, convinced of the reality that is Christ and that he is a better and lasting possession, what should be most different about your life than someone seeking this world?

  7. If you live this life by faith, God is not ashamed to be called your God.  WOW!  What is the proper response to this?

  8. Read v. 17-18.  God promised Abraham’s descendants would come through Isaac.  Then, Abraham obeyed God and was willing to sacrifice his son Isaac on the altar.  How do you know Abraham had faith?  Does a life of faith always make sense to others?  Explain.

  9. What is the object of your faith?  Does your faith treasure God in such a way that you take joy in being made a fool for the sake of Christ?  Is your faith safe?

  10. How would you estimate a value for Jesus?  Just try to guess.

  11. The value of a reward is extremely motivating.  People will act crazy on TV for the chance at a large value of money.  When we resist acting how the Word of God commands us to act and treasure the things we are supposed to treasure there is a breakdown somewhere.  What can your actions show you about how you truly value Jesus?

  12. Read Matthew 13:44.  Do you think this guy was made fun of or talked about by the way he lived?  What caused him to act in such a counter-cultural way?
