READ Hebrews 2:1-4 – “Superior to the Angels”

QUESTIONS:

  1. Chapter 2 starts with the word “therefore”.  The author is about to build on the argument from Chapter 1 that Christ is far superior to the angels and gives practical application to us.  The application for us is to do 2 things: 1) “pay closer attention” and 2) “not drift away”.  Both of these terms are sailing terms.  1) refers to securing a ship to a dock.  2) refers to a ship that has not been tied and drifted too far away from the dock to recover.  Knowing these two terms, rewrite verse 1 below in your own words from this new understanding.

  2. After establishing in verse 1 what we are to do, in verses 2 & 3 the author explains why we are to do it, that is, why we are to “pay attention” and “not drift away.”  In verse 2 the author mentions a message declared in the past by angels that was reliable and that being disobedient to this message resulted in punishment or retribution.  What message is the author speaking of here?  (Hint:  Deuteronomy 33:1-2, Galatians 3:19)

  3. If God delivered the message above by angels, and disobedience to that message resulted in punishment, if God were to give a message of salvation directly through his Son, who is superior to angels, what will be the result of neglecting this message?

  4. If you are a Christian, what are ways you neglect your salvation?  If you are not a Christian, why do you neglect the opportunity to receive such a great salvation?

  5. According to verses 3 & 4, name all the ways God authenticated his message of salvation that is found in his Son.

  6. Jesus is more valuable than angels or any other thing.  List below things that cause you to “drift away” from the most valuable thing in the universe.  After you have, look at your list and compare these things with Christ…let their worth be consumed in the worth of Christ!
