READ Hebrews 2:14-18 – “Superior to the Angels”

QUESTIONS:

  1. In verse 14, two Greek words are used to express a powerful truth.  The Greek word for “shared” means community or fellowship.  We all, as humans, share in flesh and blood.  We have that in common.  The Greek word for “partook” means to take hold of something that is not related to one’s own kind.  Jesus is God and was incarnated in flesh and blood.  He took to himself flesh and blood.  Why is it important that Jesus became completely human?

  2. Read verses 14-15.  We know that ultimately God has complete control over death and Satan.  (Job 2:6)  But the power of a life of sin is ultimately eternal death.  How did Jesus deliver us from the bondage of death?

  3. I want us to use our imagination for a moment.  Read verses 16-17.  If God had wanted to offer salvation to the angels instead of us, how would that have had to happen?  What would have to be different about Jesus to save the angels?

  4. Why is it important for Jesus to have EVERYTHING we have?  (except sin)

  5. What if Jesus had not had a human mind or human heart?  What would the effects be?

  6. What does the word Propitiation mean?  Why did he have to be fully man and fully God to be the propitiation for us?

  7. To know that Jesus has faced everything I have ever faced or will face is completely comforting.  Read verses 16-18 and explain why this is comforting.

  8. I’ve heard people say, “Well, Jesus wasn’t tempted in the same way we are tempted today.”  This is false.  Each and every one of us has been tempted by different temptations and we’ve given in to them.  At some point in time, as we are being tempted, we have given in and sinned.  Temptation always seems to get more and more difficult until we give in.  Because of this, none of us knows what it’s like to be tempted to sin and resist it all the way to the end.  We all have given up at some point.  Jesus is the only person who has resisted temptation all the way to the end and not sinned.  Because of this, he will always know what you’re feeling, and how hard it will get as you continue to resist b/c he knows temptation all the way to the end.  Praise God we have a Savior that knows every temptation we will face and can give us the strength to resist!
